Q. As a New Yorker, how has living in the city influenced your haute couture business?
Answer (Kate Hughes): New York has been a tremendous influence on my work. The city’s energy, diversity, and fast-paced environment inspire me to create dresses that are bold yet timeless. Living in a fashion capital like New York gives me access to a melting pot of cultures, which I often draw from for inspiration—whether it’s the vibrant street style of Brooklyn or the elegance of the Upper East Side. The city also attracts a lot of high-profile clients, from Broadway stars to Wall Street executives, who are looking for unique, custom-made pieces. However, being based in New York means I can’t officially use the “haute couture” label since that’s regulated by the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode in Paris. Instead, I focus on the spirit of haute couture—handcrafted, bespoke dresses—and New York’s competitive market pushes me to constantly innovate and stand out.
Q. How do you balance modern trends with the traditional craftsmanship of haute couture in your designs?
Answer (Kate Hughes): I love blending the old and the new. Traditional haute couture is all about craftsmanship—hand-sewing, custom fittings, and using time-honored techniques like embroidery and draping, which I learned from my grandmother. But New York’s fashion scene demands modernity, so I incorporate trends like sustainable fabrics or minimalist silhouettes that are popular right now in 2025. For instance, I recently designed a gown with hand-stitched golden embroidery but used organic silk to appeal to eco-conscious clients. I also draw inspiration from New York’s architecture and art—like the geometric patterns of the Guggenheim or the vibrant colors of street murals in the Lower East Side. It’s about keeping the soul of haute couture alive while making it relevant for today’s women.
